Molasses
Molasses is a humungous mule that arrived at the Sanctuary in April 2009. Very sadly his owner fell seriously ill and could no longer look after him.
Molasses is 16.1hh which makes him the largest mule in the Sanctuary by a long way! The second largest mule is named Charity and she is only 14hh. Molasses is so enormous because his dad was a Poitou Donkey and his mum was a Shire horse! The Poitou donkey is a breed of donkey that comes from France. They have very shaggy coats and normally stand at over 14hh.
Poitou donkeys are very rare - there are only about 400 of them in the world. Shires are also at risk of becoming a rare breed, so we are very lucky to have a mule that is a Shire crossed with a Poitou Donkey! Molasses is definitely very special. His favourite treat is to lick honey off a spoon.
Evie
Evie was born at Redwings in August 2008 and lives at our headquarters at Hapton. Her mum is named Fergie and came to the Sanctuary after her owner could no longer look after her.
Evie is a very special young lady as she has a very rare skin condition named ‘pemphigus’. Her immune system (the part of her body that protects her from diseases) doesn’t work correctly and tries to attack her skin cells. This causes patches of her skin to become very sore and scabby. At first, she had to take 4 different types of medication and had special baths to help soothe her skin, but she has made such good progress that she now doesn’t take any medication!
Evie is a very playful young lady and loves to have a good gallop around her paddock. She loves to nibble your hair and always tries to eat the camera when you take a photo of her! She will stay at the Sanctuary for her whole life because of her condition.
Gladiator
Gorgeous Gladiator is eleven years old. He is a bay with a little star on his forehead and a strangely-shaped snip on his nose. He was in the London Police Force but sadly had to retire because he developed some problems with his legs, meaning that he couldn’t be ridden anymore.
Gladiator is a massive 17hh, meaning that he is the biggest horse at the Ada Cole Rescue Centre! He is famous for loving attention and always wanting to be in the limelight. Despite being so massive, Gladiator is a very gentle giant and loves it when visitors scratch his neck. He is a soppy boy with rather large ears. He often competes with his best friend Smarty to see who can get to the fence first when a visitor comes along!
