Edam
Edam is a mild-mannered miniature Shetland, who is absolutely adorable. He is chestnut and is only 6hh high! Edam lives at the Oxhill Visitor’s Centre in Warwickshire, along with many other miniature Shetlands including Wesley, who is one of Redwings’ famous adoption ponies!
Edam came to Redwings in 2004 after he was rescued from Lincolnshire. 72 horses and ponies were found living in a semi-wild state, and many of them had overgrown hooves and were riddled with worms. Their owner had left them to fend for themselves. The rescue took 19 hours, as there were so many horses and ponies to deal with. Redwings took in 49 animals, and the Bransby Home of Rest for Horses took in the other 23 horses.
As you can see from his picture, Edam loves a cuddle and attention. He’s a very sweet natured pony who loves a good pat and having his mane stroked by his human-friends.
Bandera (also known as Jack Frost)
Bandera is a Quarter Horse who used to live in the USA! Quarter Horses are very good at sprinting short distances – similarly to Thoroughbreds. They are very muscley and sprightly animals with very powerful hindquarters Bandera used to be ridden in Rodeo events (a Rodeo is where cowboys compete against each other to see who has the best cattle-herding skills).
Bandera was found in a horse sale looking in bad condition and feeling very sorry for himself, when a lady decided to buy him. Bandera and his new owner moved to the UK, but his new owner found it difficult to give him the care that he needed and decided that he would be better off living in a place like Redwings.
Bandera is a gorgeous Palomino colour – his coat is the same colour as sand on a beach. He has a beautiful white stripe running down his face. However, Bandera has one rather unusual feature! Can you see what it is from his photograph?! Bandera has had frostbite at some point in his eventful life, and part of his right ear is missing. He has been nick-named Jack Frost by his carers!
Bandera lives at the Redwings Ada Cole Rescue Centre in Essex, and is a very affectionate character who loves attention!
Doc
Doc is a wonderful playful little Shetland who currently lives at Hapton (the headquarters of Redwings). Technically, Doc is bay in colour, but really he is more of a dun colour (as you can see in his photograph!) He was born at Redwings and is only 5 months old! As Doc is so young and so tiny, he has developed a naughty little habit… he loves to climb underneath the fencing in his paddock and escape from his field!
Doc’s mother is named Snow White, and came to Redwings on the 9th of January 2008. She, like Timothy’s mother who you can read about on the next page, came to Redwings after she was rescued along with 21 other horses from Amersham. Other charities such as World Horse Welfare and the Blue Cross were involved in the rescue of these horses, as were the local police.
Doc is an inquisitive young chap who will always wander over to the fence to say hello. He loves to smell your hands to see if you’re hiding any delicious treats!
