Rodney
Rodney arrived at Redwings with five other horses, ponies and donkeys; Pinky, Perky, Del Boy, Bouzy and Jessie, after a request from an organisation sadly facing closure due to the current recession.
Their owners ran a small animal education centre for local school children to interact with and learn about animals. Sadly they were struggling financially due to the recession so they made the very difficult decision to close the centre and re-home the animals. The centre manager contacted Redwings to ask for help with re-homing the two ponies, one horse and three donkeys.
The admissions panel gave it some very careful consideration and decided that because the centre had made such a valuable contribution to the local community they would offer all the equines a home.
Rodney is a rather unique donkey due to the colour of his coat. He is described as being ‘apricot’ in colour because of the rather lovely orange tint to his fur!
You can visit Rodney at the Ada Cole Visitor Centre, which is open all year round and has lots of four legged friends who would love to meet you!
Muna
Lovely Muna is a very unique Redwings resident as she has a particularly odd obsession that is more akin with monkeys! She loves bananas!
Muna will do anything for a banana! She even eats the skin; she’s quite fussy though and insists that the bananas are as ripe as possible, so much so that they’re nearly black! Now you’ve probably already realised bananas are not usual horse feed so Muna only gets one every now and then as a very special treat.
Muna came to Redwings in 2007 with her two friends Lady and Rocky. Lady is an Ada Cole equine, whose guardians asked for her to be returned to Redwings as unforeseen circumstances were forcing them to downsize their group of six horses.
Lady’s guardians asked if Redwings could help with the re-homing of two of their other equines, Rocky and Muna, as they were struggling to find a suitable home for them. After some very careful consideration it was decided to offer the pair a home here along with Lady.
Bertie
Big, Beautiful Bertie!
This gorgeous boy arrived at Redwings in December 2009 following a request for help from Lancashire Mounted Police.
Bertie joined the police force in 2001 when he was five years old. He soon showed his true cheeky nature to his trainers. His favourite trick was to plant himself to the spot and refuse to enter the riding school - what a naughty boy! Unfortunately after eight years on the force Bertie sustained a ligament injury and was no longer able to be ridden. Lancashire Police were struggling to find Bertie a suitable home so contacted Redwings for help.
While in the Police, Bertie was quite the hero! He attended football matches to help with crowd control, a music festival where he was faced with a vicious dog, Blackpool Illuminations, charity events and even enjoyed the odd game of Horseball! Bertie is so brave that he even went into the sea without hesitation to rescue a man from drowning! What a super star!
After consideration by the Admissions Panel it was decided that Bertie had definitely earned the right to a peaceful retirement so we were delighted to offer him a permanent home here.
