Adoption Horses!
I have just been on a trip to Redwings with my class and found out that the horse Dylan and me share the same birthday. I would just like to know what year he was born. Also I think you're really cool.
Well thank you very much - I am pretty cool if I do say so myself. Dylan was born in 2001 which means that he is eight years old... but he is soon to be nine! I wonder if you're the same age... Thanks for your question!
Hi Red. How are Rhadlon and Boo? They are my favourite horses. When is Rhadlon's and Boo's birthday?
Hello, Rhadlon and Boo are doing well thank you very much! They have both been enjoying the sun. Boo has been sunbathing and Rhadlon has been standing around pulling funny faces. Rhadlon has become the head of his herd and has been bossing all the other horses around! Rhadlon's birthday is on the 20th of August, and he will have a party on the 23rd of August. Katy's birthday is on the 27th of July, but will be having her party on the 26th of July. Thanks for your question - hope this helps!
Hello, I adopted Icky and would like to know how old he is and would also like to know what his favourite food is. I came to visit 2 weeks ago and gave him a nice cuddle and a stroke and would like to say that all the horses look so happy and that they have such a nice place to live.
Thank you so much for your lovely message. Redwings is a really nice place to live as we are all well looked after and receive lots of attention! I bet Icky was thrilled that you came to visit him. You are lucky to have been able to cuddle him and give him a stroke, as he can be quite nervous now and then - he must really like you! Icky is 21 years old and he told me he isn’t really sure what his favourite food is. He loves apples but he also loves carrots too!
Hello Red! How is Will Scarlet and his friends? I can't wait to come and see you all in summer!
Will Scarlet is very well indeed - he is very pleased that you asked about him! He had a poorly foot for a while but it is well on the way to recovery. His girlfriend Harley is very well too - she grazed her knee but its all better now! Thanks for asking about Will!
I would just like to ask about my wonderful sponsored horse Darcey. Well first I was wondering how old she is. I know her birthday, but I just don’t know how old she is. Also I was wondering what her favourite food was. Thank you Red!
Hello my dear. Thank you kindly for adopting Darcey! She is a very beautiful lady. She celebrated her 10th birthday very recently. Her favourite food is apples - just like me! Well, I like carrots too… and hay... and grass… All food is my favourite food! Thanks for your question!
Hey Red! Misfit and Dolly are my adopted ponies and I just wanted to know how many hands they are!
Hello! Thank you for your question! That's great that you have adopted Misfit and Dolly... They are both pretty cool. Misfit is really really tiny, and is only 8.2hh. That's only about 34 inches tall. Dolly is still only a pony, but is quite a lot bigger than Misfit! She is 13hh which is about 52 inches high. Did you know that a horse is measured only up to it's withers, and not the top of its head? Have a go on our 'What's the Point?' game and see if you can find a horse's withers!
Hi Red, I was just thinking about my horse Freebie when I remembered I have also adopted Rhadlon. I was wondering if you could tell me a bit about him seen as I'm so busy with Freebie and hardly have enough time to come down and see him every week. So can you?
Hello! Rhadlon was rescued in 2002. He had been shut in a barn for four years and was never let out. The barn was never cleaned out and Rhadlon had very badly overgrown feet. He had also lost a lot of muscle meaning that he was quite weak. Thanks for adopting Rhadlon! Have fun with Freebie!
Hello Red, I would like to ask you where does Oliver Twist live and how old is he?
Hello there. Oliver Twist normally lives at our Caldecott Visitor Centre near Yarmouth in Norfolk. You can click here for more information! Oliver has been quite poorly so he is currently living at our Hapton Headquarters to get some urgent veterinary treatment. He is 17 years old and will be turning 18 on 1st June! Thanks for getting in touch.
Q. I have just adopted Icky (I had Sydney but sadly he died) and I do not know anything about him. Can you tell me a bit about him please?!
A. Hello there my friend. We are all really sad about Sydney, he was a great horse and we all loved him loads. We all feel sorry for Icky too, because those two were the best of friends. Icky was very protective of Sydney and was never far from his side. Icky is quite an unusual pony! He came to Redwings when he was destined to go for slaughter. He was looking very sad and very ill. Icky's real name is Haw Idris - this is the 'posh' name he was given when he was registered with the Spotted Pony Society! Icky doesn't really look that spotty when you first look at him, but if you look again you can see that he has ginger-coloured flecks in his mane, tail and coat. Icky is a lovely pony, but he can be a little bit nervous from time to time and still has specialist handling training to this day. Thanks for your question, and I hope that you enjoy adopting Icky!
Q. Hi Red. I love Victor the Shire but I don't know that much about him. What is his favourite food and who is his best friend?
A. Hello! Victor is really cool, and all the horses here love him! He came to Redwings quite a long time ago in 1991. He started his life in another Sanctuary in the Midlands, but they were only a very small Sanctuary. Shire horses are very expensive animals to keep and need a lot of grazing. The Sanctuary decided to find Victor a more suitable home, so he came to live with us here at Redwings! Victor doesn't have a favourite food, but he does love apples and carrots. His best friend is named Rosie. She is a Shire horse too but she is a lot smaller than Victor (she is 16hh), and her colour is Strawberry Roan. Rosie is a very beautiful horse, but is a lot quieter than Victor and doesn't enjoy being in the limelight as much as he does! Thanks for you question!
Hello Red, it's coming up for Dolly's birthday and I was just wondering if she would prefer carrots, apples or mineral licks as I got a invitation to come to her party on Sunday 14th June and I don't know what to contribute towards her birthday. I would also like to make a big big thank you to all the staff at Redwings for taking in unwanted horses, ponies, mules and donkeys. Thank you.
Thank you so much for your lovely message. It is very sweet of you to say such a thing! Dolly loves her food, so I'm sure she wouldn't mind what you choose to contribute towards her birthday! If you are going to attend her birthday party you could bring some carrots or apples with you and give them to the staff so they can share them out amongst Dolly and her friends. Thanks again for your message! You are very kind!
Hi Red :) Please could you tell me where Finnegan the colourful cob is, as I would like to visit him and maybe adopt him. I think he is gorgeous! :) Thanks x
Finnegan lives at the Ada Cole Rescue Centre which is near Harlow in Essex. You can have a look at www.redwings.org.uk/visiting for more info! You’re right, Finnegan is gorgeous… all the girls here love him!
Hey Red, is Oliver ok? Will you tell him that I said Happy Birthday?
Hello, Oliver is all better now and is back at Caldecott Visitor Centre with his friends. Of course I will tell him you said Happy Birthday! He will be very pleased!
What is the name of the horse that was used for drug smuggling?
Hello! My friend Darcey was used by some horrible people to smuggle drugs. She travelled back and forth across the continent which left her with really bad permanent damage to her legs. If you would like to adopt her, you can have a look at www.redwings.org.uk/adopting!
Whats up Red? I really want to adopt Dolly as I think she is awesome, but first I would like to find out wo her best friend is so I can adopt him or her as well.
You're right, Dolly is pretty awesome. Dolly's best friends are Troy and Henry. Troy looks quite a lot like Dolly, and Henry is a mule! Unfortunately Troy and Henry are not on our adoption scheme. But as Dolly is such good friends with them, she often talks about them in her updates! Thank you for your question!
Hi Red! I have adopted Katy for about two years now. Could you please tell me her age and height and how she is doing. What Sanctuary does she live in?
Hello there! My good friend Katy is very pleased that you asked about her. She is 19 years old and is 12 hands high (which is about 48 inches tall). She is doing really well but she's not looking forward to the summer as her Sweet Itch might come back again! That's when the flies irritate her skin and make her a little bit itchy. Katy lives the Ada Cole Rescue Centre in Essex! Thanks for your question!
Hi Red! I have recently adopted Will Scarlett, and I want to know how long he has been retired for, how big he is, and what his favourite thing is in the whole wide world?
Hello! That's great that you've adopted Will Scarlett. He's a very nice man. Will is about 16hh (which is about 64 inches tall), so he is quite a big horse! He retired from Nottingham Police Force in about 2004 when he was eight years old. Will's favourite thing in the whole wide world is his best friend Harley! She was rescued by the RSPCA in 2003 when she was found shut up in a stable in an incredibly bad condition - it was knee-deep in muck and her stable was so small her head was touching the roof. Harley actually has a fracture in her skull which will never heal, meaning she can never wear a bridle. Thanks for your question, and Will is very pleased that you have chosen to adopt him!
Hi Red. I haven't adopted her but i think Felicity is lovely! Could you possibly tell me some things about her e.g who is her best friend, what age is she etc.?
Hello there. I must agree that Felicity is a very nice lady! She's very pretty too. Felicity is 11 hands high, and is 19 years old. She came to Redwings in 1990 with her mummy who is named Jerina. They came from another sanctuary as Jerina had very poorly hooves that needed very special attention. Felicity has several best friends including a donkey named Humphrey who is 43 years old! Humphrey is actually Redwings' oldest resident! Thank you for you question!
Hi Red. I have adopted 2 ponies Dolly and Misfit. I am currently doing some fundraising and I have visted Ada Cole Rescue Stables but is there anything else i can do?
Hello! Wow that's brilliant! Misfit and Dolly are very grateful indeed, and I would like to say thank you very much for fundraising for us! It's sounds like you have done a lot to help Redwings already! If you would like to do anything else you could email fundraising@redwings.co.uk and ask for some Recycle Your Mobile envelopes and pass them around to all your friends. Redwings will get up to £10 for every mobie received. You could ask for a collection box and put it in your school to collect donations. Thank you so much for your question and for doing so much to help our equines! We're very grateful!
Hi Red! I have just adopted Boo! He is so sweet, me and my mum instantly fell in love with him! Do you know how tall he is and how old?
Boo is a very handsome chap, isn't he? He was very excited to hear that you have decided to adopt him so thank you! Boo was born in 1994 so he is 13 years old and he is 14.3hh which makes him technically a horse rather than a pony, but only just!
Who is Dylan from Oxhill's best friend?
That's an easy one! Dylan is friends with Stig, Romeo and Puck but his bestest friend in the whole world is Snuffles, a very cute pony with a twisted muzzle who Dylan loves to play with all day.
What breed of pony was Polly and what breed is Finnegan?
Adoption pony Polly was a native pony, although as she was a rescue case I'm afraid we don't know any more than that about her history. Beautiful Finnegan is a traditional cob - he even has hairy legs (known as feathers) which gives the game away! You can read more about all our adoption horses by going to the Adoption pages of the main Redwings website - follow this link >>>>>>> but don't forget to come back soon!
Red, what sort of horse is Darcey? And when I visit her (my adoption horse) I always leave some carrots. Should I keep leaving the carrots or give you the money instead?
Our adoption horse Darcey is a very pretty dapple grey German Warmblood - I'm so glad to hear you adopt her, thanks for your support! It's very kind of you to leave carrots when you come to visit Darcey as she loves them! In fact, all the ponies are always very grateful for them. But of course if you would prefer to leave money then that is very welcome too and can help the team here to buy all the medicines and food that we need. As there are more than 1000 of us that's an awful lot of mouths to feed! Thanks for your question and we look forward to your next visit.
Did you know that I have adopted Sampson? I haven’t met him yet, do you think he will be fun?
Thanks for your question, it is great you have adopted Sampson. He is such a sweet and lovely pony. You will have to try and get to see him one day, as he is such good fun. He loves to play with his friends in his field, I heard the other day that he was a little cheeky when the lady photographer went to get his photo. He ran around so much he got covered in mud! So he looked very muddy when she took his photo. Isn't he naughty? I hope you enjoy adopting Sampson and that you can see him soon. He is definitely good fun! Enjoy!
Hi Red I was wondering if I could send Katy a Christmas Card?
Of course you can! Katy would be so pleased. You can send it to: Katy the Adoption Pony , Redwings Horse Sanctuary, Norwich Road, Hapton , Norfolk, NR15 1SP.If you send her a lovely card that you did yourself, it might even get in the Young Redwings magazine!
Hello, I am coming to see Victor this Saturday at the Caldecott Visitor Centre and would like to know if you are going to be there?
Hi there, it is lovely you are going to see Victor on Saturday, I am sure he will be so pleased to see you. You never know, I might be there on Saturday, it does depend on the weather really as my coat does not fare too well in the rain so we will have to wait and see. If I am there it would be lovely to see you. Hope you enjoy seeing Victor! Bye.
